Transforming the Auction Experience for Stages Theater

When it comes to fundraising galas, design isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about strategy.

For the “Tiny Beautiful Things” Spring Fundraising Gala at Stages Theater in Houston, our goal was clear:
create an immersive auction experience that would increase guest engagement and ultimately drive more bids.

What resulted was an unforgettable Enchanted Garden–inspired auction environment that not only captivated guests—but kept them lingering longer, interacting more, and contributing at a higher level.

The Vision: Designing with the End Goal in Mind

As an Experience Strategist , I approach every event by starting with one question:

What is the outcome we want to drive?

For this gala, the objective was to:

Increase time spent in the auction area
Encourage guest interaction with items and experiences
Elevate the perceived value of the event (and therefore donations)

From there, we built a design concept that aligned perfectly:

An Enchanted Garden that feels elevated, immersive, and irresistible to explore.

Entry Experience: First Impressions that Set the Tone

The moment guests approached the auction space, they were transported.

We designed a layered entry moment featuring:

Three tall iron arches wrapped in live smilax greenery
Soft green draping for movement and texture
Twinkle lights woven throughout for a magical glow
Lanterns with candlelight to create warmth and intimacy

This wasn’t just an entrance—it was a transition point that signaled to guests:

You’re stepping into something special.

And that emotional shift matters. It primes guests to slow down, explore, and engage.

Auction Area Design: Inviting Guests to Stay Longer

The auction space itself was intentionally designed to feel:

Chic, not cluttered
Immersive, not overwhelming
Inviting, not transactional

Working alongside Swift Event Rentals , we layered:

Draping in rich green tones in varying shades for depth
Tall green topiaries to add height and dimension to the space
Organic textures through live greenery installations
Warm ambient lighting to soften the industrial venue backdrop

The result? A space where guests didn’t just pass through—they lingered .

And in fundraising, time in space = increased bidding activity.

Experience Stations: Interaction Drives Impact

To deepen engagement, we incorporated interactive experience stations , including:

A styled vignette that encouraged guests to capture and share the evening—extending the event’s reach beyond the room.

How we transformed a 4-day corporate retreat into an unforgettable Southwestern experience for 60 guests

When it comes to planning corporate incentive trips that truly reward top performers, the details matter. Earlier this year, SOULESTA Creative had the privilege of designing and executing a spectacular 3-night, 4-day corporate incentive trip to The Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain in Marana near Tucson, Arizona for a successful sales team and their guests from Houston.

From custom mobile apps to cowboy hat bars, here's how we created an immersive Sonoran Desert experience that this repeat client won't forget.

From Takeoff to Tucson: Setting Expectations with Technology

Before guests even left Houston, we set the tone for an elevated experience. The experience began even before our guests touched down in Arizona. We handled all travel logistics, including securing a group flight on Southwest Airlines. To ensure a smooth transition upon arrival, we arranged private motorcoach transportation with Diamond Transportation, whisking everyone directly to the breathtaking Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain.

Understanding the importance of clear communication, we developed a complimentary, branded mobile app for all attendees. This personalized guide included:

Detailed Itinerary: Flight confirmations, bus schedules, and daily activity breakdowns.
Essential Information: Weather updates, suggested attire, insights into the altitude difference (a key consideration for our Houston-based group), and crucial Wildlife and Safety precautions regarding local fauna like javelinas, scorpions, snakes, and tarantulas.
Event Details: Formal invitations to the celebratory dinners.
Resort & Local Guides: Maps, onsite activity options (Native American flutist, mountain bike rentals), offsite adventures (casinos, zip lining), and restaurant recommendations.
Important Contacts: Onsite and offsite emergency information, including hospitals and non-emergency police, along with direct contact information for the Solstice Creative team.

Event Planning Tip: A well-designed event app eliminates confusion, reduces day-of questions, and shows guests you've thought of everything before they've even asked.

Arrival Experience: First Impressions that Wow

Thoughtful Welcome Amenities

Each guest room featured a luxurious Ritz-Carlton branded tote bag filled with desert-essential amenities:

Handheld fans for the Arizona heat
Trail mix and snacks
Ritz-Carlton branded water bottles
Arizona tea sticks and hydration packets

These practical yet premium touches ensured guests felt cared for from the moment they entered their rooms.

Welcome Check-In Reception

Knowing the resort could only check in a few guests at a time, we transformed potential wait time into a memorable welcome moment. During the one-hour Welcome Check-In Reception, guests enjoyed a taste of the Southwestern flavors to come:

Champagne service
Signature prickly pear margaritas
Refreshing prickly pear lemonade
Artisan charcuterie boards
Assorted empanadas

The resort also had an educational session on native birds of prey like owls and hawks that can be found in the Sonoran Desert, which made for a fun activity as the guests arrived.

This strategic planning turned a logistical necessity into an opportunity for guests to mingle and start their experience on a high note.

Night One: Colorful Southwestern Welcome Dinner

As the sun dipped behind the mountains, 60 guests gathered on the Brisa Lawn for a vibrant Southwestern-themed welcome dinner that celebrated the region's bold colors and flavors with a Colorful Casual Southwestern theme .

The menu was a celebration of regional cuisine with options for every dietary need (gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan, and vegetarian):

Starters & Salads:

Fresh guacamole and salsa roja with tortilla chips, Pozole Blanco soup with traditional toppings, Roasted corn and tepary bean salad, Watermelon with queso fresco and prickly pear vinaigrette, Catch of the day ceviche

Main Selections:

Chile-lacquered carne asada with charred green onions, Chicken tinga, Machaca beef chimichangas with chipotle aioli, Green chile corn tamales, Navajo fry bread and flour tortillas, All the classic accompaniments: salsas, sour cream, cilantro, lime

Sides:

Mexican rice, Frijoles charros, Corn esquites with chipotle and cilantro

Desserts:

Live Firepit S’mores Stations, Sonoran coffee cake, Churro cheesecake, Baked apple coyotas, Caramel flan

As twilight turned to evening, the dance floor opened, while DJ Phil from Pro Music Resource kept the energy high.

Two fire pit s'mores stations added an interactive dessert element that guests loved.

Day Two: Choose Your Own Adventure

Understanding that incentive trips work best when they balance structured activities with personal choice, Day Two offered three curated experiences:

Golf Enthusiasts (1/3 of group): Tee times at the resort's championship golf course, The Golf Club at Dove Mountain, with stunning mountain views

Spa Lovers (1/3 of group): Appointments at the award-winning Ritz-Carlton Spa, Dove Mountain for ultimate relaxation

Pool Devotees (1/3 of group): Reserved Turkesa pool cabanas with a private taco bar and beverage service

This flexible approach ensured every guest could enjoy their ideal vacation day while still feeling part of the group experience.

Dinner was on their own at a place of their choice on or off the resort.

Day Three: White Stallion Ranch Adventure

The highlight of the trip was a full day at White Stallion Ranch, where authentic Arizona ranch experiences awaited.

Morning Activities

Diamond Transportation motorcoaches brought the group to the ranch, where guests split into three adventure groups:

Mountain jeep tours through rugged terrain
Horseback riding with mountain views
Archery sessions

Cowboy Cookout Lunch

After working up an appetite, guests gathered at the ranch pavilion for a true cowboy cookout with grilled hamburgers, Sonoran hot dogs wrapped in bacon and a full beverage bar.

The Surprise: Cowboy Hat Bar

The most talked-about element of the entire trip was Harper & Honey's custom cowboy hat bar. Guests selected from assorted colored hats and personalized them with:

Leather branding
Feathers and/or dried florals
Unisex hatbands

Everyone left with a unique, wearable souvenir that became an instant memento of the trip—and made for incredible photos at the evening's dinner.

During cocktail hour, Harper & Honey provided branded leather luggage tags for each guest—a practical luxury gift that extended the brand experience beyond the trip.

Moving from buffet to plated service signaled the special nature of this celebration:

First Course: Mixed greens with shaved fennel, cucumber, scallions, green apple, and sherry vinaigrette

Main Course (Guest's Choice):

Grilled beef tenderloin with Madeira jus or Herb roasted halibut with herb chermoula
Accompanied by truffle mashed potatoes and asparagus

This year, our Houston-based event planning team had the pleasure of partnering with our valued corporate client, Taylor Morrison, to create a truly one-of-a-kind event for their residential community, Travisso, in Leander, Texas, just outside of Austin. The "Taste of Travisso" event needed to showcase not just beautiful million-dollar homes, but the diverse, welcoming culture that defines this stunning Hill Country community.

The Vision: Celebrating Diversity Through Global Culture

The goal of “A Taste of Travisso” was to showcase Travisso’s luxury homes to a diverse audience of potential buyers. By encouraging current homeowners to “bring a friend”, the developer created a community-driven event with a personal touch. Our role as the event planning agency was to design an unforgettable experience that aligned with the international theme while also reinforcing Travisso’s brand identity.

Our vision was an immersive "around the world" passport experience that celebrated four distinct cultures across four model homes: Japan, Texas, Italy, and India . With sweeping views of the Austin hills, this event was a carefully orchestrated journey that transformed a residential cul-de-sac into an international destination.

Setting the Stage: First Impressions Matter

Arrival Experience

Recognizing that luxury clients expect seamless experiences, we partnered with Kenfield Golf Cars and Next Level Valet to transport guests directly from the amenity center parking to the event entrance. This thoughtful touch eliminated parking concerns while building anticipation for what awaited.

The Airport Check-In Concept: The Passport to Travisso

Our custom check-in station, designed like an airport ticket counter, immediately immersed guests in the travel theme. Featuring Travisso's signature orange and navy branding, the station displayed four clocks showing times in Austin, Florence, New Delhi, and Tokyo under "Arriving On Time" signage. Each guest received a Travisso’s-branded tote bag and passport card – their ticket to collecting stamps from each of the four model home destinations for a chance to win prizes. This detail-driven design set the tone for the international journey ahead.

All luxury and custom rentals, from the check-in station to the elegant high-top tables with white fringe umbrellas, were expertly provided by Party at the Moontower Event Rentals .

From Tokyo to Texas: A Culinary Tour of Four Continents

Guests explored four uniquely curated model homes, each themed around a destination: Japan, Texas, Italy, and India. Every stop featured cuisine, gifts, and cultural activations tied to the theme, creating a full sensory experience.

Japan: The Art of Mindful Living

Culinary Highlights: Live sushi rolling station with elegant pink displays and refreshing lychee lemonade from Southern Cadence Cuisine plus a hibachi chicken fried rice show from Hibachi 2 Party
Cultural Activation: Japanese calligrapher Sari Fujimaru created personalized bookmarks with guest names written in Japanese calligraphy alongside the meaningful phrase "This moment is special and can't be replicated so enjoy it"

When a former colleague reached out to plan her husband's surprise 75th birthday celebration, we knew this would be more than just another party – it would be a celebration of life, resilience, and the power of perseverance. Five years earlier, they had planned to celebrate his 70th birthday at the same venue, but a major surgery that nearly cost him his life forced them to cancel. This milestone birthday was not just about reaching 75; it was about celebrating every precious moment they'd been given since then.

All the guests and his wife were able to keep everything under wraps and it added to such a special moment when those doors opened and he realized that everyone was there for him. Moments like that, the happiness, celebration, and the connection between everyone, are part of why we do what we do.

The celebration took place at the stunning Sweetwater Country Club in Sugar Land, Texas , in their newly renovated ballroom. The space was absolutely breathtaking, featuring floor-to-ceiling windows that showcased gorgeous views of the club's pristine golf course and serene lakes. The natural lighting and scenic backdrop created the perfect ambiance for this special milestone celebration.

When our client found our memorial service event planning through ChatGPT, she was searching for someone who could understand the urgency and emotion of planning a celebration of life on short notice. When it comes to creating unforgettable corporate holiday parties in Houston, sometimes you need to transport your guests back in time. This year, we had the absolute pleasure of planning our second consecutive holiday celebration for a valued repeat client, and we decided to make it a night to remember with a spectacular Great Gatsby Soiree at the stunning Lakeside Country Club.

Setting the Scene: 1920s Glamour Meets Houston Elegance

The moment guests arrived at Lakeside Country Club, they were transported straight into the Jazz Age. Our design vision centered around the opulence and sophistication of the Roaring Twenties, encouraging employees to fully embrace the theme with period-appropriate attire.

Ladies adorned themselves in feathers, beads, and authentic flapper dresses
Gentlemen channeled the era with newsboy hats and suspenders
The commitment to theme from all attendees created an authentic 1920s atmosphere

One of the evening's most exciting moments came after dinner when we revealed our hidden speakeasy casino station from iHostPoker Casino Parties. Concealed behind elegant curtains, this surprise element included:

Coping With The Fall Time Change

The transition to shorter days and less sunlight can trigger seasonal depression or the “winter blues.” With the recent fall time change, this time of year can be especially challenging. But with a few intentional actions, you can support your mental well-being. In this post, we’ll explore ways to manage seasonal depression, including boosting vitamin D levels, creating a self-care routine, journaling, and seeking professional help.

1. Increase Your Vitamin D Levels

Vitamin D plays a key role in mood regulation, and low levels are often linked to seasonal depression. To boost your vitamin D levels:

Get Sunlight Exposure : Vitamin D is often called the "sunshine vitamin." Aim to spend 10-30 minutes outside, especially around midday when sunlight is strongest. Even on cloudy days, you can still absorb some vitamin D through your skin.
Eat Vitamin D-Rich Foods : Include fatty fish (like salmon and tuna), egg yolks, mushrooms and fortified foods (such as orange juice and dairy) in your diet.
Consider Supplements : If sunlight is scarce, a vitamin D supplement may help. Many people find a vitamin D3 supplement effective in maintaining healthy levels through the darker months. Consult your doctor to determine the appropriate dosage for your needs. You could end up with Vitamin D toxicity if you take too much.

By increasing your vitamin D, you’re providing your body with a critical nutrient to help improve mood and energy.

I had my Vitamin D levels checked recently and was surprised to find how low my levels were and started seeing improvement once I took my doctor’s recommended supplement dosage.

2. Be Intentional About How You Use the Extra Time

The end of daylight saving time grants us an extra hour. Instead of letting it pass by, decide in advance how you’ll use that extra time to support your mental well-being.

Self-Care Activities : Use the extra hour in the morning or evening to meditate, do gentle yoga, or start a new wellness habit. Small actions, like a morning stretch routine or a calming tea ritual, can create a sense of purpose and relaxation.
Connect with Friends and Family : The darker months can feel isolating, but scheduling regular time with loved ones is a powerful way to counter seasonal depression. A phone call, lunch, or coffee date can make a big difference in how connected you feel.

Setting intentions for your time is an excellent way to feel empowered and bring light into your day.

I myself have to reimagine my work day as I don’t like working in the dark, so the change encourages me to wind down with self-care earlier so that I can start my day earlier.

3. Keep a Daily Gratitude Journal

A gratitude journal is a simple yet effective way to shift focus from seasonal challenges to daily positives. Research shows that practicing gratitude can reduce symptoms of depression and improve overall mental well-being.

How to Start : Each morning and evening, write down three things you’re grateful for. These could be small moments, like a warm cup of coffee or a beautiful sunset, or bigger highlights from your day.
Reflect on Your Entries : Reviewing your gratitude entries can remind you of positive moments and help combat the negativity that often accompanies seasonal depression.

With consistent practice, gratitude journaling can provide perspective and encourage a positive mindset, even on challenging days.

4. Seek Professional Help

If seasonal depression feels overwhelming, don’t hesitate to seek support from a mental health professional. Many therapists specialize in treating seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and can offer tailored approaches, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) or light therapy recommendations.

Therapy Options : Virtual therapy and telehealth services make it easy to connect with professionals from home, which can be particularly helpful during the colder months.
Benefits of Seeking Help : Speaking with a professional can provide coping tools and personalized strategies to help you manage your mood effectively.

4 things I learned from Contrast Therapy

Last month, I stepped out of my comfort zone and tried contrast therapy—a cycle of cold plunges, hot tubs, and a hot sauna. This experience was part of a female entrepreneur empowerment wellness day led by Michelle Morris, owner of Southern Cadence Cuisine and Well Done Cooking Classes at Loyly Sauna Lounge , a Houston cold plunge spa. As a calmness coach, I've always been passionate about exploring different techniques to help people cultivate inner peace and resilience.

Contrast therapy benefits are many for the body including:

Boosts Immune System: The repeated temperature shifts can stimulate the immune system, helping the body become more resilient to illness (one of the owners started with this as one form of holistic therapy to help naturally treat their cancer)

Reduces Inflammation: Helps alleviate pain and swelling by promoting blood flow to injured areas.

Promotes Weight Loss: May help burn calories and boost metabolism (the owner said we burned about 700 calories just from doing the cycle)

Detoxification: The heat from the sauna encourages sweating, which helps flush toxins from the body, while the cold plunge can tighten skin and promote lymphatic drainage.

Improved Sleep: The relaxation effects of contrast therapy can improve sleep quality by calming the nervous system.

Enhanced Mental Toughness: The discomfort of cold immersion, combined with mindful breathing, can build mental resilience and help people face challenges with greater confidence.

That last bullet was really key. The experience was physically and mentally challenging, yet deeply transformative. Here’s what it taught me:

You Can Do Hard Things: The immediate discomfort of plunging into freezing water was intense and a shock to my system at first, but I reminded myself that I could get through it and felt my body stabilize - the most amazing feeling! It’s a powerful reminder that challenges, no matter how tough, are within our ability to overcome.
Everything Is Temporary: Whether it was the biting cold or the intense heat, I knew each sensation was temporary. No uncomfortable feeling, no situation lasts forever—a lesson we can carry into every aspect of life.
The Importance of Community: I didn’t go through this experience alone. I had a partner by my side who braved the cold plunge with me, and the staff and organizer offered encouraging words that kept me going. This collective support was a powerful reminder of how community can uplift us during our hardest moments.
The Power of Breath: In moments of discomfort, breath is the anchor. Before we took our plunge, the staff went through a simple breathing technique to help us throughout the experience. Controlling my breath helped me stay centered and calm, shifting my experience from struggle to peace.

Since I’ve had this experience, life has done what life does, and I really have gone back to these lessons I learned through this experience. I'm so grateful for this opportunity to share my personal journey with you.

This experience reinforced the deep connection between breath, resilience, and community—principles I bring into my guided meditations. I believe that breathwork is an essential tool for cultivating inner peace. Additionally, meditation has been shown to increase levels of the neurotransmitter GABA, which helps to regulate anxiety.

Neuroscientific research has shown that meditation can increase gray matter in the brain regions associated with learning, memory, and problem solving. When I was first starting out in business, I researched the tools that a lot of my industry peers were using and they were using multiple systems and had to put together ways for those separate tools to communicate with each other which just seemed inefficient to me. 2.Sage:

Sage is another popular software that offers a range of solutions tailored for growing businesses or those with complex needs, like inventory management and multi-currency support. Sage has advanced financial management capabilities however, the learning curve can be steeper.

When I first started my businesses, I was incorrectly told that QuickBooks wouldn’t work for my 3 businesses, so I tested out Sage. They have great customer support but the user interface was a little too complex for my needs just starting out and it was difficult to find an accountant in my area that was familiar with the system. Also, in order to log in the accountant would need their own Sage account. I ultimately chose QuickBooks but Sage is still an option to consider based on your business’ needs.

Tools for keeping organized

Running a business means keeping track of countless documents. One area of stress for many entrepreneurs is document management—keeping files organized and collaborating effectively with team members and clients. I want to share two powerful tools that can help you streamline your document management process and create efficiency in collaboration: Google Drive and Box.

1. Google Drive:

Google Drive is a cloud-based file storage and collaboration platform that offers a suite of productivity tools, including Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides. This seamless integration with other Google tools like Gmail and Calendar makes collaboration a breeze. Share documents, spreadsheets, and presentations files in real-time with your team, track revisions, and access them from any device. Ideal for entrepreneurs looking for a user-friendly solution that integrates with their existing Google ecosystem.

Even before I launched my business, I started saving and organizing files I would need to a new Google Drive account, specifically for my business. My favorite thing about Google Drive is that you can open and edit Microsoft documents without having the cost of a Microsoft account. This was huge for me transitioning from my corporate job to becoming an entrepreneur and was one less thing I had to buy.

I started with the Business Starter plan that also allows you to create custom email addresses with your domain name, adding to your businesses’ professionalism.

It has also been great for collaborating with my clients on their projects and saves time for meetings, as we can comment within the Google documents and get real-time updates from each other.

2. Box:

Box is another cloud-based file storage and collaboration platform that's designed for businesses of all sizes. Box offers advanced security features and data encryption to ensure your confidential documents remain safe, making it ideal for businesses that require strict security and compliance standards. It also has features to automate workflows and get e-signatures. Whether you're working on a project with your team or collaborating with external partners, Box provides a centralized platform for efficient document management and collaboration.

At first, I didn’t realize this was a different company from Dropbox, but it is. To me, Box offers more value for the cost. I primarily use Google Drive for my document management and file sharing but I keep Box as a back up in case someone cannot access a file in Google Drive for some reason.

Create a strong and memorable presence

One area where many entrepreneurs struggle is branding—creating a strong and memorable brand identity without the need for a costly marketing agency. Worry not, Calmpreneurs! I want to share two powerful tools that can help you elevate your branding effortlessly: Canva and Creative Market.

1. Canva:

Canva is an intuitive graphic design platform that is a versatile solution for your creative needs. You don't need prior design experience to create professional-looking logos, social media graphics, presentations, and more with the help of pre-made templates. Customize freely with fonts, colors, and photos to match your unique brand personality. Ideal for entrepreneurs seeking a quick and cost-effective way to create professional-looking designs.

When I became an entrepreneur, I was initially stressed about having to use a complex design platform but Canva is so user-friendly and makes designing so much easier! Having templates to start from vs. a blank page has also helped me get my designs done quickly and with an elevated and cohesive look.

I also love that I can collaborate with others who are helping me with designs and we can comment and make edits to the same design, making it an efficient and smooth process.

Creative Market is a marketplace for curated design assets, including fonts, graphics, and templates created by independent designers from around the world. With Creative Market, you can browse thousands of unique design resources to enhance your brand's visual identity. Whether you need a new logo, website theme, or Canva social media template, Creative Market offers a diverse selection of premium design assets to help you stand out from the crowd. Ideal for entrepreneurs seeking distinctive visuals that are aligned with your brand aesthetic and support independent creators.

I first was introduced to Creative Market when looking for a unique font for my logo and to use in my branding to set my designs apart from what many other people are using in Canva. You can purchase a license to use your fonts commercially, which was important for me from a legal and copywriting perspective.

One other thing I love about Creative Market is that if you sign up for their email list, they send out 4 free assets once per week (example below.) These are current assets that are for sale, that they make free to download if they’re included in that week’s email. These assets include fonts and all types of templates to use within different design platforms like Canva, Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop and even within Google, like presentation templates for Google Slides. I’ve purchased from Creative Market but the added value of the weekly freebies has made me a customer for life!

2. Northwest Registered Agent:

Northwest Registered Agent provides virtual addresses specifically designed for LLCs and corporations. They offer registered agent services and are a reliable partner in handling your legal documents and ensuring business compliance.

When I was first registering my LLC, I decided I didn’t want to use my home address as my registered agent address, so I went with Northwest Registered Agent. Their address is in Austin, which is why I did not use it as my primary business address and went through Anytime Mailbox for that.

Why can’t you use a PO Box as your business address?

You also cannot use a PO Box for your registered agent address. The purpose of a registered agent is to ensure someone can readily accept legal documents on your behalf. Since PO boxes might not have regular staff present, it's difficult to guarantee someone will always be available to receive and sign for important legal documents. Most states require registered agents to be physically present at the address during regular business hours to receive legal documents on your behalf. A PO Box lacks a physical location (as they are simply mail forwarding locations, not physical offices) and hence cannot fulfill this requirement. Using a PO Box in violation of state regulations could result in penalties or even business license suspension.

Tech overwhelm and endless tasks can be a huge source of stress for business owners. Worry not, Calmpreneur! Here are 4 AI and automation tools to free you to focus on what truly matters: your success and well-being.

1. ChatGPT (AI) :

ChatGPT is an AI-powered chatbot that can assist you with a wide range of tasks, from generating blog posts, social media captions, website copy, and even email copy. Free your mind for bigger picture thinking while this AI wordsmith helps with the content creation.

I use ChatGPT regularly and it is so helpful to have a place to start for brainstorming ideas and is great to get started with content creation versus starting with a blank page! I currently am using the free account but there is a paid subscription option with more features.

2. Google Gemini (AI):

Gemini is also an AI-powered chatbot from Google. It differs from ChatGPT in that it gives you 3 different drafts of text answers to choose from. The information also ties into existing Google applications giving you options like putting the information in a table and exporting it to Google sheets and also having location information put into a Google maps format.

I use Google Gemini just as often as ChatGPT and often ask them the same questions and work with whichever fits my project the best.

3. Zapier (Automation):

Zapier is an automation platform that allows you to connect different apps/services that don’t already speak to each other and automate workflows. With Zapier, you can create "Zaps" that automate repetitive tasks and streamline your business processes. From automated emails campaigns to triggering actions based on events, Zapier can help you save time and reduce manual work.

All in one platforms are ideal but when you have different tools, Zapier is amazing at being able to seamlessly connect them and they have “Zaps” available for many of the most popular online tools.

4. IFTTT - If This, Then That (Automation)

IFTTT is an automation platform for business and home that lets you set "if this, then that" workflows. It enables you to create "applets" that trigger actions based on specific conditions. Automate tasks like syncing files between cloud storage services or syncing your calendar with to-do lists.

Cost-Effective Medical Coverage

Being your own boss is liberating but parts of the entrepreneurship journey can be stressful and can impact your well-being. One of the biggest sources of stress? Health insurance. As an entrepreneur myself, this was one of my main stressors as well when I was first starting out. Cobra from my previous employer was over $800 per month for just me alone. Navigating complex high cost plans can feel overwhelming, adding to your already full plate.

But worry not, Calmpreneur! We’re going to explore 3 health insurance options that can offer peace of mind and fit your budget:

1. Fixed Indemnity Plans:

Also known as “fixed benefit plans.” They offer a unique approach to health insurance, providing fixed benefit amounts for covered services, regardless of the actual cost. These plans offer flexibility and simplicity, with predetermined payouts for various medical expenses. This predictability can be a huge stress reliever, knowing you have a defined sum to help cover medical bills.

There are also no “networks” and you can also see any doctor you choose, which I have found has led me to be able to choose more quality doctors.

While they may not provide comprehensive coverage, they can be a cost-effective option for entrepreneurs seeking basic protection.

I personally use this type of insurance through a company called Sidecar Health. I have saved a good amount of money with this plan as my insurance payments are less than what I would have been paying for Cobra or insurance via The Marketplace. The downside is that you do have to keep up with submitting the medical bills from each medical appointment so that does take a bit of time, but I’ve found it still worth it for the value of the benefits I’ve received so far.

You can also enroll, change your coverage or cancel at any time offering even more flexibility.

2. Health Insurance Marketplace:

The Health Insurance Marketplace, also known as the Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplace, is a government-run platform that offers a range of health insurance plans designed to meet the needs of individuals and small businesses. Through the Marketplace, entrepreneurs can compare different plans based on coverage options, premiums, and deductibles. The Open Enrollment period is specific, so this is something to keep in mind to plan accordingly for.

I looked into health insurance through the Marketplace and while they did have many plan options, for me personally, I still found the monthly payments to be quite high.

The other challenge was that some of my doctors that I see regularly, do not take the Marketplace version of the insurance plan so I would still end up paying out of pocket for those doctors in addition to my insurance payment. Just because a medical provider takes a health insurance brand like United Healthcare, that doesn’t mean they take the Marketplace version of it so that’s something I recommend checking beforehand with your current doctors.

3. Discount Medical Plans:

Discount medical plans offer discounted rates on healthcare services from participating providers. These plans don't technically qualify as insurance in the traditional sense however they can help entrepreneurs save money on medical expenses, including telehealth visits, prescription medications, dental, vision care and more. Discount medical plans are often affordable and accessible, providing a valuable resource for entrepreneurs looking save on routine care to manage healthcare costs.

Tips to Create a Calm Space

I’m sharing about all aspects of self-care for your overall wellness in honor of September being Self-Care Awareness Month, which includes taking care of your home life. Your home should be your sanctuary and a place of peace and not a place that creates more stress for you with disorganization and chaos. In this blog, I’ll share 7 ways you can create a space of calm.

1. Closet Cleanout: Get rid of at least 3 pieces of clothes, shoes, or accessories that you haven’t worn this year.

Closets can be one of the most stressful spaces in the home when disorganized and full of clutter. You can waste precious time and money when you aren’t able to see or find your items. Practice keeping your closet clean by regularly removing items you don’t use.

One rule of thumb I personally use is to remove an item as I add an item. So if I’m going to buy new clothes, shoes or accessories, I have to really want them because I’m going to get rid of something old in the new item’s place.

There is also a hanger trick, where you turn all your hangers in one direction and as you wear an item, you turn the hanger in the other direction. At the end of the season or year, remove any clothes that are on the hanger in the direction of those that were never worn. This can help keep closet clutter to a minimum!

2. Bathroom Bliss: Add your favorite scent and calming music to your bath/shower time to create a spa-like experience.

When most people think of self-care, they think of trips to a spa. While I love a good spa day, they’re not always practical, so I like to find ways to get that spa-like experience at home.

One of the ways you can do this is at your bath/shower time by adding some calming elements like your favorite scent with essential oils or a candle and some soothing music or your favorite nature sounds.

Aromatherapy has an amazing soothing power and I add it into my evening shower meditations. My favorite scent is a lemongrass essential oil and I use a few drops of it in my shower and instantly feel a sense of relaxation and calm.

3. Kitchen Calm: Declutter your kitchen pantry, fridge and freezer by getting rid of any old or expired food.

The kitchen is the heart of the home where nourishing yourself and loved ones should be a peaceful experience. Take time to regularly remove any old or expired food from your pantry, fridge and freezer.

One way I keep up with this is by labeling everything I put in my fridge with what it is and the date with a sharpie and masking tape. This helps me keep track of the dates of everything and makes it easier for knowing when I need to throw things away.

4. Bedroom Relaxation: Organize or throw away any clutter from your nightstands, dressers, or sleeping area.

Your bedroom should be a space for rest and relaxation. Having any type of clutter in your bedroom can impact your stress levels and quality of your sleep. Make sure to keep your bedroom a calming space by removing any clutter from your nightstands, dressers, or sleeping area.

I make this a daily habit after making my bed each morning of moving anything that doesn’t belong in my bedroom, so that all is clear in the evening when it’s time for bed.

5. Living Room Retreat: Light your favorite candle this evening.

Your living room can be a restful retreat before going into your bedroom to sleep. You can start to relax by lighting your favorite candle and creating a cozy ambiance.

6. Worry-Free Workspace/Office: Spend at least 30 minutes organizing or getting rid of any papers, files, or supplies that you don't need.

Having an office or workspace disorganized and full of clutter can cause you to be less focused and unproductive. I definitely feel this way when there are papers all over my desk.

Create a system for keeping your papers and files organized and for organizing your supplies to help keep your workspace and worry-free environment. Taking at least 30 minutes a day can help clear your space before things start to pile up and get too out of control.

7. Garage/Storage Area Cleanse: Spend at least 1 hour organizing or getting rid of anything that you don't need.

When I first moved into my home from an apartment, the main thing I did not want was a messy garage space. I took extra time to move because I didn’t want moving boxes piled up in my garage. Your garage is the first thing that greets you when driving into your home and I wanted that space to be a space of calm as well.

Over time, I’ve collected more things in my garage but I’ve had to be intentional about setting up a system to keep it clean. Trying to tackle it all in one day can be overwhelming, so I suggest taking an hour a day to work on it and tackle it little by little.

Taking Care of Your Physical Well-Being

September is Self-Care Awareness Month so I am sharing about all aspects of self-care for your overall well-being including physical health. In this blog, we will explore essential self-care practices for your body to help you feel your best and maintain your health. From mindful eating to staying active, let's jump into seven key areas of self-care for your body.

1. Healthy & Mindful Eating: Plan out what nutritious meals and snacks you're going to have each week.

Taking care of your body starts with the food you put into it. Plan your meals and snacks mindfully to ensure you're getting the nutrients your body needs. Consider creating a weekly meal plan that includes a variety of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. This not only supports your physical health but can also improve your mood and energy levels. Also practice mindfulness while you’re eating your meals by taking the time to savor the meals while you eat them and by sending gratitude for all the ways it will nourish your body.

I start my planning for the next week on Saturdays so I can start preparing multiple meals for the week on Sundays. This system has helped me maintain healthier eating habits during the week.

2. Sleep Routine: Create a bedtime ritual that allows you to get 6-8 hours of quality sleep.

Quality sleep is fundamental for physical and mental well-being. Establish a sleep routine that allows you to get 6-8 hours of uninterrupted rest each night. It’s important to create an environment conducive to restful sleep.

Minimizing screen time can help with a better night’s sleep. I do not have a TV in my bedroom and I have my phone set to go to grayscale and dim the screen light at a certain time each evening as a signal for me to prepare for bed. The blue light that phone screens give off can also keep your brain active and impact your sleep.

3. Health Check: Schedule that doctor’s appointment you’ve been putting off.

Regular check-ups are essential for maintaining good health. If you've been procrastinating on visiting your doctor, now is the time to schedule that appointment.

I recommend regular physicals with bloodwork to see where your overall health is and if you may need to add any nutritional supplements.

4. Loosen Up: Start your day with gentle stretching and take breaks during the day to stretch.

Gentle stretching is a great way to wake up your body and release tension. Try to integrate stretching exercises into your routine at the start of your day and take short breaks during the day to stretch and loosen up any tension around the body.

I begin each day with some simple stretches which have helped me so much with tightness in my neck and shoulders. Since I sit at my computer for a lot of the day, I also take regular breaks to move my body and do more stretching exercises to not get too stiff.

5. Healthy Hygiene: Explore healthier body products with natural ingredients.

Explore the world of healthier body products with natural ingredients. Be mindful about choosing products that are free from harsh chemicals and artificial fragrances, promoting healthier skin and overall well-being.

Your skin is your largest organ, so it’s important to consider what products you're taking into your body through your skin. I enjoy trying out different natural products to find the best ones that work well for me.

6. Stay Hydrated: Have at least 1 glass of water with each meal.

Water is essential for nearly every bodily function. Most just need help staying hydrated by having a way to make it a habit. Simply having at least one glass of water with each meal can boost your energy and overall health.

I’ll be honest and admit that I don’t love drinking water by itself but having it with each meal has really helped me increase my intake. I also have a large water bottle with the times of day on it that helps me keep track of how much water I’ve had throughout the day.

7. Fitness Day: Engage in your favorite physical activity, whether it's yoga, biking, or doing a wellness walk.

Physical activity is part of the foundation of self-care for your body. Find joy in your favorite fitness activities, whether it's yoga, biking, or going for a wellness walk. Consistency is the most important thing over what type of exercise you do.

I don’t enjoy high intensity exercises, so I get the most joy from taking a simple daily sunset walk. Sometimes I take these walks with friends, making them an even more special activity.

Caring for your body is an essential part of self-care. By nourishing your body with nutritious foods, prioritizing quality sleep, scheduling health check-ups, and engaging in physical activity, you can boost your physical health and overall well-being. Taking Care of Your Mental Well-being

In honor of September being Self-Care Awareness month, I wanted to share some tips to support you in taking care of yourself. Self-care practices can be helpful in dealing with mental challenges such as anxiety, depression and managing stress. In this blog, I’ll share seven self-care tips to help you maintain a healthy state of mind.

1. Plan Ahead: Take a few minutes to plan your upcoming week and how you’re going to incorporate self-care into each day.

Being proactive and planning ahead gives you a sense of control of your day and can reduce anxiety. Life can feel overwhelming when you're constantly being reactive. Try creating a daily or weekly schedule and prioritizing your top 3 tasks. It’s important to also add to your plan the ways in which you will incorporate your self-care into each day. Having a plan can make a big difference in your peace of mind.

2. Gratitude Journal: Write down 3 things you're grateful for each day.

Practicing gratitude is a powerful way to shift your focus from negative thinking around what's lacking in your life to the positive thinking around being grateful for what you already have. Start a gratitude journal where you jot down three things you're grateful for every day. Gratitude practices can train your mind to appreciate the positive aspects of your life and can also having a calming effect for reducing anxiety and stress and can also improve sleep.

3. Tech-Free Evenings: Disconnect from screens in the evening and enjoy quality time with loved ones or by yourself.

It's important to unplug and disconnect from screens and connect with your loved ones and with yourself, especially in the evening. The blue light that comes from devices can disrupt your sleep patterns and contribute to stress. Dedicate a tech-free evening to engage in other relaxing activities like reading, meditation, or quality time with loved ones.

4. Mindful Breathing: Practice deep breathing exercises for relaxation and stress relief.

Chair yoga, a gentle and accessible form of yoga, allows individuals to experience the benefits of yoga without having to get down on the floor. I’m passionate about offering wellness techniques that are simple and easy for most people to be able to do and I have an additional certification in teaching chair yoga. I’d like to share some of the transformative benefits of chair yoga:

1 | Reduces Tension and Stiffness : Chair yoga can be especially helpful for individuals who experience stiffness, such as those with arthritis or other joint conditions. The gentle movements and stretches in chair yoga can help to reduce stiffness, improve joint mobility, and enhance overall comfort and wellbeing. Incorporating these movements into your daily routine can significantly reduce muscle tension caused by prolonged periods of sitting or sedentary lifestyles. Additionally, the relaxation techniques in chair yoga can help to reduce tension in the muscles and promote relaxation throughout the body.

I have days where I’m primarily sitting at my computer and use chair yoga techniques to relieve the tension that builds up around my body from sitting in the same spot for too long.

2 | Increases Strength: Holding certain poses and movements for an extended period of time can help to build muscle endurance on the spine. As you flow through poses, you can gradually build strength in your core, arms, legs, and back. These strengthening exercises contribute to better posture and increased muscle tone.

Chair yoga has been a great way to engage my muscles and improve my overall strength.

3 | Improves Flexibility: Chair yoga involves a series of gentle stretches and movements that can help to increase flexibility and range of motion. This is especially important for seniors or individuals with mobility issues who may struggle with traditional yoga poses.

4 | Reduces Chronic Pain : Chair yoga has been shown to be effective in reducing chronic pain, particularly in the lower back and hips. The gentle movements and stretches promote joint health and can help to release tension and improve mobility, which can alleviate pain and discomfort.

DISCO 40TH BIRTHDAY EVENT HIGHLIGHTS + PHOTO GALLERY

SOCIAL EVENT IN HOUSTON, TX

We had such a great time planning our client’s disco themed 40th birthday party this month and wanted to share a recap of all the details!

The Venue

The event was held at a Houston event venue called Toque Event Space @toqueeventspace , located in The Galleria area of Houston. It was the PERFECT venue for a disco themed party as it already came complete with a huge disco ball with lights that greeted guests as they entered. The disco ball shined throughout the night and definitely provided that wow factor! The staff was also amazing to work with from the planning to the execution the night of.

The Decor

We wanted an elevated and sophisticated feel for the celebration and chose a color scheme of gold, silver and black. The main elements were gold and silver disco balls and personalized vinyl records.

Balloons - there were balloons at the entry, at the photo stations and throughout that were provided by Margarita Kimmy of @balloons4meandu .

Custom personalized signs and party items - the custom personalized items were all designed by our SOULESTA™ Creative team! We had so much fun creating the designs for this event and giving it that extra personal touch.

SCHIZOPHRENIA AND MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCES

My dad suffered from schizophrenia and I'm sharing in honor of Schizophrenia Awareness Day and in hopes that severe mental health challenges are more openly talked about. There should be less shame around our loved ones having what should be considered as a brain disorder that affects about 24 million (or 1 in 300) people, according to the World Health Organization .

It's one of the most difficult things to deal with as the person may not be ready to admit that they need help/ treatment or the illness itself keeps them from believing they need to.

So what can you do if you have a loved one suffering with schizophrenia?

While you can't force an adult to get treatment if they're not a harm to themselves or others and it may seem hopeless at times, there are things you can do and am sharing some resources below.

1. Educate Yourself

I recently found an excellent podcast called " Inside Schizophrenia " and both hosts live with mental illnesses - one has schizophrenia and the other has bipolar disorder and they interview others living with mental health disorders and medical professionals. There are many books out there as well.

2. Join a Support Group

NAMI (the National Alliance on Mental Illness) has many support groups and resources across the nation. The Houston division can be found here https://www.namigreaterhouston.org/

3. Talk to a Mental Health Professional

Your loved one may not agree to see a therapist/psychiatrist but you can see one yourself and ask them for their advice.

4. Ask Your Loved One Questions

I got these from the Inside Schizophrenia podcast mentioned above. They're meant to be asked when your loved one is not in crisis.

• What evidence do you need to be convinced that you have a disorder?

• If you accept the diagnosis, what do you think will happen?

• What are you afraid will happen if you get help?

5. Emergency Detention Order

If your loved one is a harm to themselves or others, then you can request for a peace officer to take them to a mental health hospital for an evaluation. The hold is for 48 hours. If you need to call 911, be sure to ask for a Crisis Intervention Team officer from the Houston Police Department’s Mental Health Unit who is trained to deal with those suffering from mental illness. More details on the process can be found here .

These resources however, are not a guarantee and your loved one still may refuse help and you have to prepare yourself for that and what the outcomes may be. It's important to remember that as with any situation in life, you can only control yourself and not anyone else. Knowing and accepting that has brought me peace throughout the extremely difficult times of being the child of a mentally ill parent.

LEMON BLUEBERRY PANCAKE RECIPE

SWEETHEART PANCAKES

RECIPE

1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
3 ½ teaspoons baking powder
½ teaspoon salt, to taste
1 tablespoon white sugar
3 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 egg
1 1/4 cups buttermilk
1 lemon
½ cup blueberries

Mix together all the dry ingredients first, then add the lemon zest. Then add the juice of the lemon you zested along with all the wet ingredients. If your batter is too thick, you can add more milk of any kind. Gently stir in the blueberries last.

Preheat your pan over medium heat. Be careful not to turn your heat up too high so that your pancakes don't burn! Spray your pan and ring with cooking spray and then add your batter.

Cook for about 2-3 minutes until you begin seeing holes on the top side of the pancakes and can lift the ring from the pancakes and then flip them. Cook for another 2-3 minutes until golden on the opposite side. Then transfer your pancakes to a serving plate, add top with extra blueberries and enjoy!

**You can easily make this a waffle recipe by taking up the oil to 6 tablespoons.

1. ORGANIZATIONAL FOUNDATION

Start with having a place to organize all of your files for your business. Before you start the formation process, you want to make sure you have a central location where all of your business files can be accessed online at any time and not just limited to one device.

3. CONTACT FOUNDATION

ADDRESS
Decide on the primary address you will use for your business BEFORE filing any legal documents. If you use your home address, it will be searchable and public information. If your business does not have a storefront address, you can use a virtual business address. You cannot use a PO BOX as your business address and need to use a reputable company at an actual office building for your virtual business address. We recommend Anytime Mailbox .
You will also need an address to use for your businesses’ Registered Agent. There are companies you can use for this and we recommend Northwest Registered Agent.
EMAIL
Set up an official email address with your company name as the domain. We recommend using Google Workspace for this.
PHONE
Sign up for a business phone number, preferably with a service that gives you the ability to do SMS messaging for business should you choose to market that way down the line. We recommend Twilio .

4. STRUCTURAL FOUNDATION

File for your legal entity with your Secretary of State as either a Sole Proprietor, LLC, Partnership, S Corp, C Corp, B Corp or non-Profit. Filing can be done on your own or with the assistance of an attorney or CPA who handles Business Formation.
Have your company’s Operating Agreement prepared, which you will need for your business bank account.

5. FINANCIAL FOUNDATION

Get your EIN , which is like the social security number for your business.
Get a business bank account to separate your personal and business finances.
Set up an accounting system to manage your business financials. We recommend Quickbooks.
Set up a payment processor for the ability to accept credit card payments. We recommend Stripe for online transactions but Square and Paypal are also options.

SWEETHEART WAFFLE RECIPE

RECIPE

The base is just 7 ingredients:

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

3 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt, to taste

1 tablespoon white sugar

6 tablespoons vegetable oil

1 egg

1 1/4 cups buttermilk

I also added cinnamon and nutmeg but they're optional.

Mix together all the dry ingredients first, then add in the wet ingredients.

Preheat your waffle iron (link to waffle iron below!) over medium heat. Be careful not to turn your heat up too high so that your waffles don't burn! Cook for about 2-3 minutes until golden brown and flip the iron. Cook for another 2-3 minutes. Then transfer your waffle a serving plate, add your toppings and enjoy!

**You can easily make this a pancake recipe by taking down the oil to 3 tablespoons.

SIMPLE CREPE RECIPE

CREPES

1 1⁄2 cups of milk

2 tablespoons of vegetable oil

3 eggs

1 1⁄2 cups all-purpose flour

1/8 teaspoon salt

Option 1: Put all ingredients into a blender container in the order listed. Cover and process on HI until smooth.

Option 2: Mix all ingredients together using a whisk.

Use a nonstick pan for the best results and preheat the pan on medium heat. Spray the pan with cooking spray.

Tilt and swirl your pan while you pour in about 1/4 cup of the the crepe batter.

Once the crepe lightly browns, shake the pan to loosen the crepe from the pan.

Use a spatula to flip the crepe and cook for 1 additional minute.

Transfer your crepe to a plate using the spatula, leaving it flat.

Add your choice of filling. The fruit salad recipe I used is below!

Fold your crepe and add additional toppings and enjoy!

FRUIT SALAD

1 lb strawberries, chopped

1 1⁄2 cup blueberries

1 cup blackberries

1⁄4 cup local honey

1 lemon juiced

Mint to taste

(flax and chia seeds optional)

Add chopped fruit to a large salad bowl; set aside. In a mixing bowl, whisk together honey,

lemon juice, and zest. Pour Honey Lemon Dressing over the salad; gently toss to coat. Cover with

plastic wrap and refrigerate for 20 minutes before serving.

Looking for gallery wall ideas?

I'm happy to share what I know on all things gallery walls.

What is a gallery wall?

A gallery wall is a collection of items grouped together and featured on a wall of your choice. You can use a gallery wall to tell any story you wish to tell. For me, my home office gallery wall represents daily inspiration to keep me going during my work day.

Are gallery walls still in?

It's 2023 and I still get compliments on this wall, so I'd say that they're still a thing! Below are some useful tips for planning for your gallery wall.

LOCATION

First, you should decide where you want your gallery walk to go. Be considerate of any furniture pieces or doors that may make the gallery wall appear differently whether the door is open or closed. For example the front door to my home office is always open so I planned around it and did not place any gallery wall canvases behind the door because they would always be covered with the door open. This helped me determine the area I would be using and the amount of canvases that I would need.

I chose the wall across from my desk in my home office because I knew I wanted something inspirational to look at everyday to keep me going while I was hard at work. I chose some of my favorite inspirational phrases and quotes by some of my favorite people like Oprah Winfrey and Coco Chanel.

I also have a second gallery wall in my home entryway that features timeless black and white photos of my family.

DESIGN AESTHETIC

The next important thing is to decide on the look and feel that you want your gallery wall to have. I wanted mine to have a clean yet chic look so I wanted to have a black and white gallery wall with gold accents. This made it easier when I was shopping to find canvases that would go nicely together and compliment each other on the wall.

Do gallery frames have to match?

That's up to you! There are no rules when making your gallery wall your own. For mine, I chose to have some pictures that are framed and some canvases that are unframed. And I loooove how the mixing and matching turned out.

MEASUREMENT & LAYOUT

Once you have all of your pieces, the next step is to decide how you want them to be situated on the wall.

Make sure that you're taking good measurements before you start the process of nailing anything to the wall to prevent damages that you'll have to fix later. One of my old mentors used to say "measure twice and cut once" and you definitely wanna apply that to this!

The easiest thing to do is find a large surface like a desk or your floor to space everything out. Take the dimensions of your wall space you want to use and mark them with tape to make sure the dimensions stay in line with the wall. Or if you're fancy, you can take the dimensions of everything and map it out electronically.

Need a gallery wall hanging hack? My hack is to hire a professional. I spent many hours trying to do it myself and they still didn't come out lined straight. I saved myself the stress and told a professional how I wanted everything arranged and let them do all the dimensions and hanging. But another alternative is to make sure you have a level if you are hanging yourself to make sure everything comes out straight.

MARDI GRAS MEMORIES

It's the official start to Mardi Gras season! I have the best memories of growing up in Alabama of Mardi Gras season with my grandma. She LOVED going to the parades and all things Mardi Gras! I later learned that part of the reason she loved it so much was because it was her time to be like a kid again. Mardi Gras was so important to her, that she took me out of school so we could go see the parades in Mobile. The beads on the tree are from the last time I went to Mardi Gras in Mobile with my grandmother in 2014.

MARDI GRAS HISTORY

For the longest time I never knew what Mardi Gras actually meant. “Mardi” is French for “Tuesday,” while “Gras” means “fat,” hence “Fat Tuesday.” It was given this name because of the timing before Ash Wednesday.

Most people believe Mardi Gras originated in New Orleans but it actually began in Mobile. Mardi Gras originally started in 1703 in Mobile when French settlers celebrated at Twenty-Seven Mile Bluff, the first settlement in the city. I love the symbolism of the Mardi Gras colors. Purple symbolizes “justice,” gold is the symbol of “power," and green symbolizes “faith.”

MY MARDI GRAS TREE ORIGIN STORY

I'm a huge believer in waiting until after Thanksgiving to put up any Christmas decorations. I love Thanksgiving and want it to have its day! But then that only leaves one month of having your Christmas decor up after all the work that goes into putting everything up.

I was complaining about this to my uncle in Mobile the first Christmas in my new home and he told me that they keep theirs up through February for Mardi Gras. I don't know if I had just forgotten this as a kid or didn't pay attention but just like that, a new tradition for me was born!

I was so excited about doing this as one of my traditions and you can too! In Mobile, Mardi Gras is so popular there, that they have Mardi Gras ornaments and decorations available in stores, so my uncle purchased ornaments for my tree. You can purchase similar items to create your own and I've included some links to Mardi Gras decor below!

Transforming a Community into a Haunted Trail

As an event planner specializing in large-scale corporate events, we pride ourselves on creating unforgettable experiences. For Halloween, we took on a unique challenge for a corporate residential client: transforming a corporate community's walking trails into a spine-chilling haunted trail. The result? A spooktacular event that captivated over 350 attendees.

A Night of Frights and Fun

Our "Haunted Trails" event was more than just a Halloween party; it was an immersive experience. As guests ventured through the winding trails, they encountered a cast of terrifying characters: an eerie witch, a chilling zombie, a sinister clown, and a towering grim reaper on stilts. Every corner held a new fright, creating countless “jump scare” moments that guests won’t soon forget.

Fog machines cast a spooky mist over the trails, creating an eerie ambiance complemented by dim, flickering lights along the paths. Carefully placed decor and themed props made every twist and turn of the trails a new scene to discover, providing a thrilling backdrop for our scary actors to shine.

Beyond the thrills, we offered a variety of activities for all ages. A live band and DJ provided the perfect soundtrack to the spooky night, filling the air with Halloween tunes and high-energy beats.

Halloween wouldn’t be complete without sweet treats! The community’s onsite café joined the festivities, providing a variety of spooky-themed snacks and beverages, from ghostly cupcakes to Halloween punch.

A costume contest, showcased the creativity and Halloween spirit of the residents, with prizes awarded for the most original group, individual, and pet costumes.
